2009 Service Opportunities:
In the spirit of St. Thomas of Villanova who spent much of his life serving the poor, the greater Washington DC chapter of the Villanova alumni association invites you to become involved in acts of community service. Each quarter the alumni society will sponsor two or three opportunities to work side-by-side with other alums in the service of others. Many of these opportunities are child-friendly so that the spirit of community service might be passed on to the next generation.
Inter-costal Clean-up
In conjunction with Clean Virginia Waterways and National Public Lands Day, volunteers will be collecting and tallying trash at two locations. You won't believe what we'll find in our local streams and waterways! Come help make our local environment safer for people and wildlife. No experience necessary. Families are welcome! Homes For Our Troops wants to build a specially adapted home for Sgt Kiernan but needs your help! Contact Jeaneen at to commit to a construction day this Fall (we'll commit to the weekend with the largest number of volunteers) or to see how you can help Sgt. Kiernan without leaving your desk job.

Community Service and the Greater Washington DC Chapter
In the past years the chapter has participated in three Hands on DC's events (2001-2003) which tasked our alumni chapter with assisting to refurbish various inner city public schools, three Toys for Tots collection happy hours (2001, 2002, 2003) in which the DC chapter received special recognition from the US Marine Corps for our involvement in the toy drive, as well as variuos other Hands on DC fundraisers.
In December 2000, the DC chapter held a fundraiser at the Clarendon Grill for the Lorton Community Action Center which raised over $1000 in donations to the center as a result of the DC Chapter's involvement.
The DC Chapter has also been awarded the 2000 Fr. Ray Jackson Award for our community service activities during that year. Brent Emery, the chapter president, was presented with a plaque as well as a donation in the chapters name to the charity of our choice.
